I received some wonderful comments from readers to my post about Zen Habits. One from Michelle of Skindigo in Wisconsin shared a wonderful insight I hadn't considered:
I think it should be obvious to those of us in the spa industry that with over 33,000 people subscribed to Zen Habits people are craving simplicity not injectibles.
(She also shared a similar blog Think Simple Now.)
This made me realize that pretty much all my friends and family want less: less clutter, things, toys, junk, paper, things to worry about.
All because they want more time with family, friends and enjoyable experiences. I don't know if it because I mostly interact with 30 and 40 somethings and this is part of this decade, of if this a Gen-X thing, or if it is a micro-trend that is going to soon be a buzz word. Although I don't have data handy, I know that I'll receive much more appreciation (and I'll give it too) for a gift of experience. Experience of a baseball game or a movie or a wonderful time at the spa.
And if you are a medical spa, how can you connect with clients that are seeking simplicity in their lives with your services. Permanent hair removal and peels come to mind here for services that end up saving clients time in their daily routines (e.g, no shaving, less time to apply makeup).
For hair stylists, do you promise to give cuts that fit someones lifestyle and morning routine yet makes them feel confident and stylish? Clients usually don't want to sacrifice looking good because they have hectic mornings. You can help them achieve both...be sure to let them know!
Food for thought: How can you be connecting with your clients to let them know that your business is an excellent "gift of experience"?

THanks for the comment and kind words! I really like the TypePad platform for blogging. While there are a few things I'd like to be different, my complaints are few and far between. It's easy to use and design.
I am tempted to plan my next milestone birthday at your retreat in Sedona! It looks like a wonderfully fulfilling place for spiritual exploration and renewal.
