As the holiday season is fast approaching, now is a good time to start planning your spa or salon holiday promotions. Some good ideas include hosting an open house or perhaps a charity drive at your spa or salon. I've always said that adopting a charity is good for business, and there is no better time to do it than during the holiday season.
Here's some ideas to help develop some positive word-of-mouth marketing and free publicity for your spa.
First, pick a cause that you are excited about:
- Community beautification project -- Recruit volunteers to help improve a neglected public area or local school.
- Sunscreen drive for troops overseas - Clients can bring or purchase sunscreen and you send to troops overseas.
- Take care of the care takers -- Go onsite and provide mini-services for care takers at assisted living, animal shelters (great if you have Vegan skincare products), or homeless shelters.
- Sponsor a foundation/child/ill person. Set a goal to raise funds on one specific day and donate all proceeds. Request (not require) staff to volunteer their time that day. Motivate additional cash donations from clients with perks at future appointments.
- Food and toy drives - Client can bring canned food or toy and receive a free upgrade on a full-priced service.
- Local parades - Sponsor a float & have a makeover contest for the winner to ride in it with their family or friends.
- Blood drive - Host a blood drive in your lobby, parking lot or large public area. Give exclusive perks to donors like neck massage or free upgrades on full-price services.
- Essay contest - Why my mom/dad/teacher needs a spa day/makeover.
- Any charity or cause that you are passionate about.
Next, plan the event and market it to your clients. Update your website; include in your e-newsletters; send postcards; post flyers in the spa, salon, locker rooms, treatment rooms; list on community event calendars; and request posting of flyers at related businesses.
Finally, write and distribute a press release before and after the event. The first will tell the larger world about the event in advance and hopefully engage a report to cover the event. The follow up press release will communicate the impact of the event and detail how much was raised or hours contributed.
And last, but not least, don't forget to congratulate yourself for giving back to the community that you care for in you salon or spa.
